When Is the Rut in 2026? Peak Rut Dates for VA, NC, SC, GA and TX

The rut lands on about the same dates every year. Here are the peak rut dates the state wildlife agencies publish for Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and two Texas regions, each linked to its source.

The rut in 2026 will peak on about the same dates it does every year, because shortening day length sets it off, not cold fronts or the moon. Going by the state wildlife agencies' own figures, peak breeding falls around October 30 across most of South Carolina and on October 31 in North Carolina's Southeastern zone, so both are at or near their peak this week. Virginia peaks around November 16. Georgia's rut map, which charts peak deer movement, runs county by county, from mid-October on the coast to late December in the southwest corner. In Texas, the Edwards Plateau peaks between November 7 and December 5 depending on how far west you are, and the Pineywoods between November 12 and November 22.

Why the dates barely move

North Carolina's Wildlife Resources Commission writes that little variation exists in peak breeding from one year to the next, because doe estrus cycles "are triggered by shortening day length during the fall, rather than weather events, including moon phase." Texas Parks and Wildlife found that "in most areas the rut varied very little from year to year," and says the idea that cold weather causes the rut "is disproved by white-tailed deer breeding in tropical climates." Justin Folks, deer project leader at Virginia's Department of Wildlife Resources, puts it most plainly: "it's the same time every year."

A peak date is the middle of a spread, not the only day that counts. The North Carolina Commission notes that some does are bred before the peak and others well after it, and the Texas study found rutting bucks during most of the hunting season in many regions. Folks's advice for Virginia is to be in the stand "the weeks before, during, and after November 16."

The Carolinas: late October into December

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources' long-run data put the average conception date at October 30, with 83 percent of does bred between October 6 and November 16. Its breeding map puts the southern coast earliest, from October 1, and the mountain corner of the Upstate latest, into mid-December.

In North Carolina, the Commission's 2025 update of its peak conception estimates gives an average for each deer season zone, from October 31 in the Southeastern zone, which covers much of the coast, to December 5 in the Western zone. Which zone a county sits in is set out in the Commission's hunting regulations. Our 50-acre lease in Halifax County is in the Northeastern zone, where the average peak is November 8; the Commission's own estimate for Halifax County is November 10, though it rests on only six samples.

Georgia: look up your county

Georgia's Wildlife Resources Division publishes a rut map that charts the week of peak deer movement for every county. It is built from deer-vehicle collision records, which the division's biologists and university researchers found line up closely with conception dates and with the movement of GPS-tracked deer. The spread is wide:

Peak movement week Example counties
Oct 13–19 Camden, Glynn, McIntosh
Oct 20–26 Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, Bulloch, Burke
Oct 27 – Nov 2 Baldwin, Putnam, Hart, Jasper
Nov 3–9 Bibb, Houston, Morgan, Cobb
Nov 10–16 Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Clarke
Nov 17–23 Lee, Tift, Colquitt, Fannin
Nov 24–30 Dougherty, Thomas, Rabun, Habersham
Dec 1–28 Quitman, then Decatur and Grady, Early and Miller, and last Seminole

The division cautions that a county with fewer than 100 deer-vehicle collisions in the sample period had "too few to determine meaningful results." Georgia's firearms season opened October 17 and, for most hunters, runs to January 10.

Virginia: November 16

The Department of Wildlife Resources works backward from the fawn drop: peak fawning in Virginia is about the first week of June, and with a gestation of about 200 days that puts peak conception at November 16. In most of the state, the private-land firearms season opens two days earlier, on Saturday, November 14; some counties and cities run different dates, and the department lists them all. If the late season suits you better, we wrote up a 190-acre lease in Northumberland County.

Texas: Edwards Plateau and Pineywoods

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's breeding study examined 2,436 does across 16 study areas over three years. On the Edwards Plateau, conception ran from October 9 to January 30, peaking November 7 in the east, November 24 in the central plateau and December 5 in the west. In the Pineywoods, most breeding fell between October 21 and January 5, peaking November 12 in the south and November 22 in the north.

The general season opens Saturday, November 7, in both the North and South zones, the same day as the eastern plateau's peak. For ground on the plateau itself, see our 21-acre lease in Edwards County.

Getting on ground for the rut

Many hunters plan their time off around the rut, so the time to book ground for it is before it starts, not during it. On HuntingLeaseUSA, the landowner sets the price and the rules, and you pay by card through our checkout. Every hunter signs our Access Agreement and Liability Waiver, which carries the landowner's rules, before access. Before each booking is confirmed we go to the landowner, and it goes ahead only if they say yes; the exact location and access details appear in My Leases once they do. On a seasonal lease, one party holds the ground at a time.

Before you commit, our guides on how to evaluate a lease and what a hunting lease costs cover what to look at.

Common questions

When is the rut in South Carolina in 2026?

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources puts the average conception date at October 30, with peak breeding from October 15 to November 15 across most of the state. The southern coast runs earlier and the mountains later, and the timing changes little from year to year. Browse our leases or call (804) 424-5233 and we will talk through what is open.

When does the rut peak in Virginia?

Virginia's Department of Wildlife Resources puts peak conception at about November 16, working back from a peak fawn drop in the first week of June. In most of the state the private-land firearms season opens two days earlier, on November 14. Call (804) 424-5233 to ask what is open for those weeks.

When is the rut in North Carolina?

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission's 2025 estimates put the average peak at October 31 in the Southeastern zone, November 8 in the Northeastern, November 15 in the Central, November 25 in the Northwestern and December 5 in the Western zone. We have a lease in Halifax County, in the Northeastern zone: browse our leases or call (804) 424-5233.

When is the rut in Georgia?

It depends on the county. The Wildlife Resources Division's rut map, which charts peak deer movement by county, runs from mid-October in coastal counties such as Camden and Glynn to late December in Seminole County in the southwest corner. Find your county on the map, then browse our leases or call (804) 424-5233.

When is the rut on the Texas Edwards Plateau?

Texas Parks and Wildlife's breeding study found peak breeding on November 7 in the eastern Edwards Plateau, November 24 in the central plateau and December 5 in the west. The general season opens November 7 in both the North and South zones. We have a lease in Edwards County, on the plateau: browse our leases or call (804) 424-5233 to talk it through.

Do the moon or the weather change the rut?

Not by much, according to the agencies. North Carolina's Wildlife Resources Commission and Virginia's Department of Wildlife Resources both say day length, not the moon or the weather, triggers doe estrus, so peak breeding moves little from one year to the next. Texas Parks and Wildlife found that in most areas the rut varied very little from year to year, and says the idea that cold weather causes the rut is disproved by deer breeding in tropical climates. Plan around the published dates and book your ground before the peak: browse our leases or call (804) 424-5233.
