What hunters look for in South Dakota
Pheasant hunters look for CRP grass, roost cover and food plots on the farmland east of the Missouri River, which holds huge numbers of ring-necked pheasants. Whitetails live in the river-bottom timber and shelterbelts, and west of the river the open prairie, badlands and pine ridges hold mule deer and pronghorn.
The James River Valley and the Aberdeen and Mitchell region east of the Missouri are the heart of pheasant country, and the western prairie, the Black Hills and the Badlands are the deer, elk and pronghorn country.
When hunters want to be on your land
The pheasant season generally runs from mid-October into early January. Archery deer opens in the fall with firearm seasons following into November and December, spring turkey usually opens in April, and waterfowl runs through the fall migration.
Seasons, licenses and regulations are set by the state and change every year; treat this as background, not official information. Some states also have rules for landowners who lease hunting rights.
