What hunters look for in Oklahoma
Whitetails are the backbone, and hunters look for the hardwood bottoms, oak cross-timbers and agricultural edges that produce both numbers and mature bucks. Turkey hunting is a genuine draw, with some hunters pursuing both Eastern and Rio Grande birds, and the western plains add quail and, in the far northwest, pronghorn and mule deer.
The Cross Timbers of central Oklahoma, the Ouachita and Ozark foothills in the southeast and northeast, and the western plains and Panhandle are the popular areas. Waterfowlers work the reservoirs, river systems and flooded fields across the state.
When hunters want to be on your land
Archery deer typically opens in early October and runs into January, with a firearm deer season usually in mid-to-late November. Spring turkey generally runs through April into May, and waterfowl seasons fall in late fall and winter.
Seasons, licenses and regulations are set by the state and change every year; treat this as background, not official information. Some states also have rules for landowners who lease hunting rights.
